North Decatur Finishes 14th in Nation

The North Decatur FFA Dairy Foods team, recent winners of the state Dairy Foods Contest in September, competed in the National FFA Milk Quality and Products competition held during the National FFA Convention last week. The team of Haley Wesseler, Bailey Tomson, Kenzie Krieger, and Olivia Vanderbur earned a “Silver” designation by placing 14th overall as Indiana’s representative.

cdelogo lgThe National FFA Milk Quality and Products CDE (Career Development Event) is a competitive event that allows students to prove their knowledge about the recognition, selection and management necessary for quality milk and dairy products. Participants must complete a written exam on milk production and marketing, evaluate milk samples for flavor and quality, identify cheeses and characteristics, and complete milk acceptability tests in the team activity. Each team competed at the local and state levels to ear the privilege to represent their state at the national contest.

The event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention in which FFA members apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations.

“I could not be prouder of these young ladies!” said Scott Johnson, North Decatur FFA advisor and coach of the team. “To win the state contest one month and turn around and place 14th in the nation the next month is quite and accomplishment. To add to it, the national contest format was actually different than our state format so they had to put in many hours of practice to prepare for the changes. Obviously they did a good job.”
